Mercedes-Benz GLC in EU will consume 0.5 liters of fuel per 100KM

June 6, 2022

Mercedes-Benz unveiled the engines that will power the new GLC crossover in the European market (previously only exclusive versions for the US were announced). Six engine options will be available for the SUV. They will all be hybrids, with three of them featuring a powerful electric motor and a huge battery. Such GLCs are predicted to consume 0.5–0.8 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. The crossover's basic versions in Europe will have a "mild hybrid" drive - two-liter turbocharged engines combined with a 48-volt starter-generator, which adds 23 hp for a limited time. and 200 Nm, a nine-band "automatic," and all-wheel drive.

The GLC 200 and GLC 300 will have the same engine, a gasoline turbo four. Based on the alteration, it will produce 204 horsepower (320 Nm) or 258 hp (400 Nm). The diesel engine in the GLC 220 d will produce 197 horsepower and 440 Nm. The GLC 300 will be the fastest of these crossovers, reaching 100 km/h in 6.2 seconds and reaching a top speed of 240 km/h.

The same "fours" are used to construct rechargeable hybrids. Each one has a 136 horsepower electric motor incorporated inside the transmission. as well as 440 Nm and a 31.2-kilowatt battery The estimated electric range for hybrid GLCs is 104 to 120 kilometers, allowing the manufacturer to disclose entirely symbolic fuel consumption. The manufacturer emphasizes that these numbers are calculated and that the properties may alter slightly following certification tests, but not dramatically.

The power of hybrid crossovers is noticeably higher. The GLC 300 e's engine produces 313 horsepower and 550 Newton-meters of torque, the GLC 400 e produces 381 horsepower and 650 Newton-meters of torque, and a diesel-based hybrid produces 335 horsepower and 750 Newton-meters of torque. The most powerful petrol version of these crossovers remains the fastest: it will speed to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. The GLC 400 e's top speed has been decreased to 237 km/h. Such off-road cars will come standard with rear air suspension and a variety of driving electronics working modes. In addition to entirely electric, there is a Battery Hold mode in which the electronics maintain a set level of battery charge. This is done if the hybrid GLC's eventual destination is in a "green" zone where the use of internal combustion engines is prohibited.

The latest generation Mercedes-Benz GLC crossover will go on sale in Europe towards the end of this month. Later, the family should be supplemented by a diesel "six" modification, as well as particularly strong AMG models. They are anticipated to become hybrids, following in the footsteps of the new C-Class. It appears in the manufacturer's plans and the debut of the coupe-like version of the GLC Coupe.

The plug-in hybrid powertrains also include four-cylinder engines powered by Mercedes' fourth-generation PHEV drive technology. The engine is more compact and powerful than ever before, with the GLC capable of reaching speeds of up to 87 mph (140 km/h). Meanwhile, a 31.2 kWh battery pack allows the SUV to travel up to 62 miles (100 km) on electricity generation alone. So far, the electric motor in the GLC is capable of providing up to 134 horsepower (100 kW/136 PS) and 325 lb-ft (440 Nm) of torque. SUVs, particularly plug-in hybrids, are exceptionally fuel efficient according to the European WLTP test cycle. On the WLTP driving test, the GLC 200 and 300 yield 8.2 l/100 km in the city and 7.3 l/100 km on road (29/32 mpg), but the GLC 220 d performs somewhat better at 5.9 city/5.2 highway (40/45 mpg).

Meanwhile, the plug-in hybrid GLC 300 e and 400 e achieve an astounding 0.8 lt/100 km in the city and 0.6 l/100 km on the highway (294/392 mpg, respectively), while the diesel GLC 300 de achieves 0.7 l/100 km in the city and 0.5 l/100 km on the highway (336/470 mpg). That is not a mistake, according to Mercedes. However, there is a perfectly sensible explanation that has nothing to do with the diesel engine and everything to do with the enormous battery that allows the SUV to travel without consuming any fossil fuel during WLTP testing.
