DE-DIRT YOUR FILTERS

December 7, 2021

A car, like humans, requires oxygen to breathe and for the combustion process. The air filter keeps insects, dust, particles, sand, and debris out of the engines and maintains a suitable air-fuel mixture for performance. Car air filters come in a variety of designs, including panels, circular, and cylindrical. They are composed of a pleated material that purifies the air, which can be cotton, synthetic paper, or foam.

A healthy engine, like an athlete, need plenty of fresh, clean air to work at its best. The engine's air cleaner's job is to keep pollutants, dust, and dirt off your engine. This is a filthy task, and your air filter can only handle so much before having to replace. Fixing the air cleaner in today's autos and trucks is a quick and simple task that anybody can perform. It merely takes a few simple steps. Changing your car's air filter will help keep it operating smoothly and, in the long run, will prevent problems. A filthy or clogged air filter, on the other hand, can limit engine performance, reduce gas mileage, and cause your automobile to generate more pollution.

When should you update your car's air filter? Most manufactures suggest changing your air filter every 30,000 miles or at least once a year under regular driving circumstances. Replace your air filter every 15,000 miles or 6 months if you often drive on sandy or unpaved roads. To be sure, consult the manufacturer's instructions in your vehicle's owner's handbook.

Steps to changing your air filter

  • Open your car's hood and check for the air filter. On earlier vehicles, it is typically housed in a spherical metal container on the vehicle's engine top, with a single wing nut holding the top of the air cleaner housing in place. The air cleaner housing, often known as the air box, is typically a rectangular plastic housing on one side of the engine toward the front of the engine bay on modern models. Snap clips or screws hold the top of this sort of air box in place.
  • Remove the filter from the air cleaner housing. Simply eliminate the top of the older round air cleaners by releasing the wing nut, remove the old air filter, and reinstall the top and wing nut. To pop open the spring clips or release the screws keeping the top cover in place on newer cars, you may need to use a screwdriver. After that, just take up the top cover and remove the old air filter—then replace it. When moving the top cover of the air box, take care not to knock off any hoses which may be connected. While you have the cover off, vacuum out all of the dirt and debris that has accumulated on the bottom of the air box.
  • You'll be surprised at how much debris your air filter managed to collect. After cleaning the air box and installing the new filter, ensure that the top of the air box is securely and firmly placed on the bottom half, and that all of the clips or screws are refastened. Also, double-check that all hoses attached to the air box are still attached.
  • You'll be surprised at how much debris your air filter captured. After you've cleaned out the air boxes and installed the new filter, make sure you've securely and firmly seated the top of the air box on the bottom section and refastened all of the clips or screws. Also, ensure that all hoses connecting to the air box are still attached.
  • Examine your car's engine bay carefully to ensure you haven't knocked anything loose and that you have all of your tools. That's all. Isn't it simple?
